SS#13: Solar beer tastes so good?

Brew-by-solar anyone?

Hi, welcome to Solar Saturday!

This week I’m taking a look at two ‘modern’ wonders of the world: Beer and Solar. Two very different things but something that comes together very well…

I don’t mean sipping beer whilst sat on a sun-drenched beach closer to the equator! That sounds really good right now for the majority of us!

I am talking about a largely energy-demanding manufacturing process that just so happens to benefit from solar in a very complimentary way.

Solar is a surefire way to generate electricity. Even in England. Commercial rooftops are ripe for solar where there is even the remote amount of ‘demand’ for energy inside the building.

Then comes a different way: generating electricity “off-site” in a field somewhere. Electricity is not consumed there, and so it’s fed into the network.

We are seeing lots of announcements - almost daily - where corporates with high energy demands sign a financial deal to have their ‘energy’ supplied by an off-site solar farm.

And coming back to the initial topic - beer…

Asahi beer signed a PPA with solar developer European Energy last week for a 19MW solar farm to be constructed in Bath. Creating a sustainable source of energy in order to brew it’s beer here in the UK!

I love these kinds of stories almost as much as I love a good beer in the sunshine!

A nice bit of news for a gloomy spring time!

Enjoy the weekend.
